Hi guys ! I’ve had some time for myself lately so I decided not to drop the bowl and keep drawing as much as I can find the time for it.
As you know, French and Brits have had a love-hate relationship for the last 1000 yrs. It’s been so long that it has become genetic... The default relationship is hostility : les rosbifs versus les frogs.
Yet, my mum (who’s a restless believer in multiculturalism) used to make me watch “a bit of Fry and Laurie” when I was young in order to make me hear a lot of English (and teach me a bit ) but it was not before I finally understood all the jokes that I noticed how brilliant those 2 crazy guys were...Then, after spending hours watching QI with my little brother and learning that kangaroos couldn’t fart or that Alan Davies was a big child, I took my tablet and decided to try a little something.
Now for the painting itself : As far as I can tell, Stephen fry seems to be a lovely human being and the typical image of the British man...not the drunk-football-fan-slash-hooligan-depressed guy spending his life in a dirty pub but the sarcastic, cultured, educated and polite gentleman (who’s says “f*ck often though). But I recently watch “The Secret Life of a Manic Depressive” which moved me to tears and showed a deeper side of him. I discussed a lot about it with my mother who’s a shrink. Then I showed the documentary to her. What struck me most is this duality in the personality of people in his condition...and I really wanted to highlight this when I chose the colours. There’s indeed a deeper meaning.
Une petite note en français parce que généralement les francophones ne connaissent pas forcément ces grands hommes de l’humour anglais... je vous conseille vraiment de creuser un peu le sujet là dessus parce que ça vaut vraiment le detour. Autant pour le côté comique que pour les choses plus sérieuses... en plus de Stephen Fry, on peut citer Hugh Laurie, Rowan Atkinson, Emma Thomson, Alan Davies, Dawn French, Jo Brand etc. ...
